Charles Sovek Artist and Author | Painting in Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor and Gouache

I find Charles Sovek's paintings fascinating and inspiring. He has mastered the art of catching light and color directly from life in his paintings.

His website has a lot of useful information including lessons, articles that he has written for art magazines, his galleries of paintings etc.

Under Lessons from the Easel the Artist has provided free access to his book The Basics - which is based on his learning experiences from the 50's, he also has sections which are currently available only on the web where he takes you through steps on how to catch light in your paintings and lastly in learning how to "see" masterpieces, how to understand them. (click on the topics below to see the website)
The Basics - Massing-in, warms and cools, edges and patterns were but a few concepts of the litany of procedures...
Painting Anything Under the Sun - catching light is what makes a painter's world go around...
Why This Painting Works - It's one thing to look at a masterpiece and another to really see it....

You will find equally important and useful information in the articles that have been printed in various publications.

This is a painter whose work you must have a look at. You will enjoy the experience immensely.

I am currently working on exercises from his book "Oil Painting - Developing your Natural Ability". His book "Catching Light in your Paintings" is available in our Library.

Update: July 9, 2007: Charles Sovek passed away unexpectedly on June 8, 2007. I will not be exaggerating when I say that he was a very generous soul and made available a lot of information for free for the student artists on his website. I have been a big fan for the last few years and will miss his friendly presence.

  1. As far as I'm concerned no one will ever take the place of Charles Sovek as the artist of today's ideas and talent. I have greatly admired this man and his work for many years.
There will always be an emptiness in my heart when I think of the loss and the pleasure he gave to all those who wanted to learn art.

  2. Chuck and I shared a studio in Westport, Ct in the 70's. We both did design and illustrations and Chuck also did gallery paintings. He gave us a painting as a wedding gift and we love it. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Learning to draw

A couple of days back there was comment asking for help on starting to draw and paint. I'd asked him to join the WetCanvas! Classroom forum and to look up some additional sources from this site.
This morning I got a newsletter from drawspace . I find that it is growing to be a wonderful online resource for drawing lessons. These are divided into 3 levels - beginners, intermediate and advanced. drawspace also has a forum which is slowly growing and the activities are focussed on drawing with pencil, charcoal, color pencils and pen & ink. All the lessons have been written by one person and you have a choice of viewing it for free online or downloading the pdf version for a small fee. Brenda Hoddinott whose lessons populate this website is amongst other things a self taught artist. She is currently working on a new website along similar lines for Fine Art.

Today, Mayank has got an update with details of this site as an alternative and few other suggestions one of which I shall put …

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

Betty Edwards book has been a huge success. While putting together the last but one post I found a thread on the CGTalk forum based on the exercises in the book. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was the first book on drawing that I purchased and it got me started. This was over two years ago but I haven't got around to finishing the exercises in the book. I'm hoping to do so sometime soon and this thread will come in handy then.
